Last Saturday, Jessie and I kicked off what we intend to be a series of quirky crafts. “Quirky” doesn’t quite explain it though. Other words that might apply include but are not limited to: creepy, ridiculous, and WTF.
Let me start by telling you about this book Jessie found, a hangover from her childhood. Things to Make and Do was originally published in 1952, and I get the sense that when it was republished in 1985 not much of its content had changed.
Jessie, sensing this book was a good find (rightly so), shared it with me – and the idea of a series of “quirky” crafts was born.
I recently got carried away at Ikea. Translation: Lots of residual cardboard. Given those resources, we are kicking off the series with the costume patterns, specifically the bunny costume.
We started by building the bunny bodies (say that five times fast), which is really a rectangle of cardboard with a hole large enough for your head to fit through. So far it looks like a sandwich board or the start of a robot costume.
Next, on to the mask, the piece de resistance. Not having the prescribed supplies, we improvised with card stock taped together. Then came the artistic part: drawing on the face and guessing that you drew the eyes in the right spot. Lastly, we added the ears and whiskers, giving us two completed bunny masks.
And now the moment you’ve been waiting for… Dear readers, I give you the stuff of nightmares.
Usually I make crafts that are useful, can be gifted or worn or displayed somewhere. This craft fits none of those categories (though technically you can wear it). This afternoon was purely for the fun of it and being silly with my favorite Jessie. Can’t wait to bring you more quirky crafts in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
p.s. Don’t miss the bloopers!
