For the past few weeks, I’ve been taking a memoir class. Once a week, I meet with a small group of low-key, truth-driven creative writers for two hours of writerly bliss. My attendance is in no way tied to the presence of Moon Pie, the teacher’s outgoing and social cat, though it certainly adds to the experience.

For this reason, when I found myself down a camping buddy and with a reserved campsite, I decided to go it alone and camp solo for the weekend. Technically the pup was with me so I was not truly alone.

Let me tell you about a perfect morning. We rose naturally, not with an alarm but with birdsong and morning sun filtering in through the curtains. This is the first morning of our women’s weekend at the cabin. We each gravitate to our usual breakfasts (yogurt, fruit, granola). Michelle and Jessie both settle in with their books. I go outside to sit on the big rock in front of the cabin, the rock that is cool in the morning and sun-baked in the afternoon.

When in Maine, we like to visit our favorite Maine brewery, Oxbow. They have two tasting locations, one in Portland and another in Newcastle, and we prefer the latter. The Newcastle location is rustic and cozy and quintessential Maine. On this visit I discovered yet another reason to prefer the Newcastle location.
