Greetings from Maine! It seems just as the majority of the country is gripped in a cold snap, we decided to go to one of the places in the country that is sure to be even colder. We are visiting dear friends here in Maine and staying cozy and warm despite the morning temps of -15° F and the daily highs of 10° F.
I’m also one of those weird people that would rather be in a colder climate than a warmer one. You can always put on more layers of clothing. So this is where we are – enjoying our time spent in America’s snowy north.
Earlier this week we drove up to Rockland to check out the lobster trap Christmas tree. There are a few such trees up here and they are made entirely of lobster traps, sometimes new and sometimes donated by local lobstermen. The lobster trap tree was a site to behold…and it was also frigid. We quickly ducked into the Rockland Café for bite to eat. I enjoyed some delicious eggs Benedict with a side of home fries because I believe breakfast foods can and should be eaten at any meal.
Leaving Rockland, we stopped by Owls Head Light Station for a chance to see Maine in all its frosty glory, specifically West Penobscot Bay. Check it out – we climbed up the steps and were rewarded with this view.
Every time I visit a lighthouse, especially in New England, I can’t help but think about what it was like for the lighthouse keepers of old. You know, those brave people who chose to work and live at these remote outposts before the time of WiFi and cellphones and nearby grocery stores. I’m not sure I could hack it – too much solitude, but that view though! Here’s another one of the light station.
That’s it from me at the moment. I’m signing off to help get ready for our little New Year’s Eve celebration. Stay tuned for Part Two of our wintery jaunt to Maine!
